Lyrics
The bloodthirsty rabble was gathered around, hungry to snuff out her soul
They swore condemnation and ran her aground, ready to dig her a hole
“The law is the law and the punishment death,” they spat at the Law-Maker’s feet
“What do you say, should the law be obeyed, or should we let her go free?”
He knelt to the ground as they circled around, challenging Him in their scorn
Hands in the dirt that he formed with his words before the moonlight was born
Mysteries flowed through His fingers and wove patterns of glory in earth
He stood with a start and love in His heart and wrapped them all in His words.
Who among you is worthy to cast the very first stone?
Condemnation and fury for every sin but your own
How can he who has been redeemed withhold the grace he’s been shown
When the only One who is worthy to hold the stone refuses to throw?
Their fingers were trembling, their muscles were taught, the hammer was ready to fall
Still His words resonated in memories lost, and shame overcame them all.
Then one by one they all turned and they left till she was alone with her Lord.
He smiled as He said, “Condemnation has fled; now go and sin no more.”
Who among us is worthy to cast the very first stone?
Condemnation and fury for every sin but our own
How can we who have been redeemed withhold the grace we’ve been shown
When the only One who was worthy to hold the stone refused to throw?
Truth is, I confess, there’s a fire in my chest as I think of how I have been wronged
The curses they flow, and the bitterness grows while I bless my God with a song
When the plank in my eye catches radiant light, and I melt to the earth in my shame
And the voice of the Maker says, “Grace you’ve received; now go and give it away.”
